I study how buildings perform: what the model predicts, what sensors measure, and why they disagree.

關於(01) Background

Hi, I’m Marco.

I’m from Hong Kong and study Honours Mechanical Engineering Co-op at the University of Waterloo. My co-op terms have taken me from BIM at Hong Kong International Airport and WSP in Toronto to water-treatment engineering at Chevalier in Kwai Chung.

Whole-Building Energy Model

A 5,000 ft² Rochester office, benchmarked against ENERGY STAR, then pushed through 17 parametric runs.

2.1Shading

Facades that react to the sun

This tower’s adaptive shading closes against low sun and opens when the outside air helps. Responsive facades like this are what I want to research.

2.1Envelope

One variable, three answers

Lower glazing SHGC: cooling −31.5%, emissions +10.6%.

2.1Air

Outdoor air is a heating load

30 → 10 cfm/person barely moves cooling but swings emissions 18 points.

2.1Lighting

Less light, more heat

−25% lighting power: EUI −6.3%, heating +13.6%.

2.1Measurement

Predicted, not yet measured

Next: instrument real buildings and explain the gap, starting with Hong Kong.

2.1All runs

Every run, side by side

The building changed one thing at a time. Here is the best tested value of each parameter against the control, or all 17 runs at once.

Office Lighting Layout

A 48 × 34 ft office lit to 52 fc under the 0.6 W/ft² cap. Then COMFEN showed what less light does to heating.

Listening to Hong Kong’s Dormant Supervolcano

Two Raspberry Shake geophones in Pokfulam, a seismograph in Sai Kung, and triangulated tremors near Cheung Chau too small for the Observatory’s list.

My MATLAB model of drag and spin-dependent Magnus lift, re-built here so you can throw it. It matches MLB Statcast for three of four pitches; the knuckleball needs seams.
